Arkansas May Designate Mallard as State Duck

Arkansas legislators are considering a bill that would officially designate the mallard duck as the state duck, a move that highlights the state’s rich avian diversity. Filed by Rep. Jack Ladyman and co-sponsored by Sen. Blake Johnson, House Bill 1417 has already passed the House with a strong 77-10 vote, and is currently awaiting further review in the Senate.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission notes that, while the mallard is the most commonly observed duck in the state, Arkansas hosts over two dozen different species of ducks. This bill not only reflects the state’s commitment to its wildlife but also pays homage to Stuttgart, often referred to as the “Duck Hunting Capital of the World.” Such a designation would add to Arkansas’ array of state symbols, including the honeybee and Dutch oven, making it clear that the state values its cultural and natural identity.
