James Anthony Kirkwood, a 70-year-old resident of San Antonio, is sentenced to 6½ years in prison for a string of armed robberies that spanned just three days in January 2023. Over this brief period, he targeted six national chain stores, including Dollar General and PetSmart, using what he claimed was a handgun to threaten employees and commit theft, all while grappling with a crack cocaine addiction that he says overwhelmed his life.

Kirkwood’s criminal spree resulted in thefts totaling nearly $1,000, and his apprehension followed a police investigation linking him to the crimes through witness accounts and video evidence. An emotional plea during sentencing revealed his past struggle with sobriety, emphasizing how quickly addiction can derail a person’s life. In addition to prison time, Kirkwood must pay restitution of $8,945.39, as his actions were deemed to affect interstate commerce significantly.
