Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified the man shot during a traffic stop on February 11 as 21-year-old Erik Lopez Hernandez, who now faces serious charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. The officers involved—Ryan Alberts, Ellis Wilcox, and Lucas Jayne—discharged their weapons after perceiving an imminent threat while attempting to pull over Hernandez along South Boulevard in the early hours of the morning.
Details surrounding the perceived threat remain unclear, but police did recover a gun belonging to Hernandez at the scene. Currently, all three officers are on paid leave as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducts a thorough review of the incident. Following his release from the hospital, Hernandez has been charged and is now in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
